Yet it's such a minus that whether the person reviewing your portfolio is conscious of it or not, they will discount you because of it. Many young designers think having these skills is a plus. Putting art and illustrations in your graphic design portfolio is costing you the chance of getting hired. Anyone who promotes that other work does it in a completely separate place, often under a separate name. And no, if we quit our jobs and focused full time on these side projects, that would not let them grow to the point where they could sustain us. Their full time graphic design jobs allow them to do this – to essentially lose money creating art. Some people do it for free and even lose money in materials, travel, and other expenses. I doubt anyone I spoke to makes more than $1,000 in a year from that work, and it's most likely much, much less, like less than $100. The reason we all do it on the side of our full time design jobs is because it pays at what would be considered poverty levels in the U.S. I do a series of pop culture character portraits. Someone else does graffiti/street art on skateboard decks. Someone else does amazing ice sculptures all over the world. One designer does beautiful botanical studies in pen and ink. Every single one of us revealed that we do some kind of fine art/illustration project on the side. Recently a group of my graphic design peers met virtually. ![]() ![]() It's often the gateway from childhood interest in art to eventual study and work in graphic design, especially for those of us who are older and who only had limited, and primitive, design tools available to us in our youth. Illustrating things is fun and feeds our creative side. Lots of graphic designers have a fine art/illustration background.
